Bondeni
More than 100,000 Luo of western Kenya, Kamba of eastern Kenya, Kikuyu of central Kenya, and immigrant Ugandans are crowded into the three-square kilometers that is called the Bondeni village. They work as casual laborers, jua kali (itinerant) artisans and make and sell illegal (alcoholic) brew. Homes are made of tin, mud, and sticks.
About 40 people who are living with HIV/AIDS have started meeting as a Post Test Club support group. Attendance is inconsistent, however, and alcoholism and the prevalent attitude of dependency add to the challenge. The CHE (Community Health Evangelism) goals for Bondeni include promoting spiritual growth and developing projects to help the community. The local committee is in the training stage.
