Gene & Melba Morden ministry

making disciples in Turkana, Kenya

Gene and Melba Morden's primary mission goal is to make disciples. The Mordens have served the Turkana people in the Kenyan desert since 1995. They work in leadership development for house and village churches and also in clean water initiatives, installing wells and irrigation systems to provide sanitary water and help people gain food security.

They currently accomplish their goal of making disciples of Christ through five projects.

Primary, secondary and college student support through Community Sponsorship

When Jesus told us to “GO”, he gave us a heart for the Turkana people. When we arrived in 1995 we found the Turkana people were a very hospitable people eager to learn, but with a literacy rate of less than 5%.

We taught adult literacy and felt led to start primary schools. The schools teach Bible as a standard course, provide meals for children and teach parents community values. There are now 3 primary schools that enroll about 150 children each year in each school. More than 200 children graduate from 8th grade each year. More than 2,000 students have been supported through high school while over 200 have finished college.

water development

When Jesus told us to “GO”, he gave us a heart for the Turkana people.  When we arrived in 1995 we found the Turkana people were drinking dirty water from open pit wells.

We discovered that only 50% of children survived past age 2 primarily due to diseases related to drinking unsanitary water.  We began to learn how to find water sources, dig wells by hand and install durable pumps.  The people thanking God for a clean water well attests to the success of providing sanitary water in Jesus name.

The Turkana team hand digs about 30 new wells a year and has finished over 400 wells as of 2024.

Each year the local churches provide the team with a list of local communities that are still lacking clean water.  The cost to provide a clean water well for a community as of 2025 is $4,000.

Please consider a contribution towards a clean water well or sponsoring a community clean water well yourself.

irrigated farms

When Jesus told us to “GO”, he gave us a heart for the Turkana people. When we arrived in 1995 we found a malnourished people that often only had one substandard meal every 2 or 3 days. While studying Matthew 25:31-46, God convicted us that we should be helping these hungry people feed themselves. God led us to Farming God’s Way. We use Farming God’s Way to teach Biblical truths, technical skills and managerial skills that will help Turkana families make Biblically based decisions at their irrigated farms that carry over to their everyday life decisions. The goal is to help them improve their spiritual life and physical livelihood.

These people are irrigating newly planted watermelon. While cowpeas, swiss chard, spinach, butternut squash, lentils and beans provide daily nutrition, watermelon and onions, the two main cash crops, provide funds for school fees, clothes and shoes, cement and tin sheets for homes, and funds to start small businesses.

Many farmers have told us, “We knew God loved us when he sent you to bring the Good News of new life in Jesus Christ, but we knew he really cares for us when believers in America gave us irrigation to be able to care for ourselves. Thank them for us.” The farm team has taught the truths of living and farming God’s way to over 800 families. Those family farmers provide daily food for about 16,000 people. Each year the local churches identify the poorest families in their communities that could benefit from irrigated farms. Our waiting list is long. The complete cost of an irrigated plot that provides irrigation for 10 families is $20,000. Please consider following Jesus words in Matt 25:35 and help some hungry people feed themselves.

disciple making movements

When Jesus told us to “GO”, he gave us a heart for the Turkana people. When we arrived in 1995 we found a people without hope and fearing death. We began daily Bible study and used them to plant 4 churches in the first 4 years in Turkana. The drill team and the farm teams have Bible study every day. Many people have trusted Jesus as their Lord and Savior and more than 80 churches have been planted by them. In 2020 a more effective method for making disciples known as  Discovery Bible Studies (DBS) was introduced.

This is Pastor Peter Losuru. He trains church members how to use DBS to lead others to Christ. You can support this ministry by giving to the Disciple Making Movements-Turkana, Kenya.

bible training institute

When Jesus told us to “GO”, he gave us a heart for the Turkana people. When we arrived in 1995 we found an illiterate people without hope and fear of death. We began adult literacy training and Gene led 2-3 hour daily Bible Studies. Many leaders were trained, but to be registered pastors, Kenya requires training from a recognized school. The Bible Training Institute was founded as the official school for pastor training in Turkana.

Pastor Joseph Akuuta learned to read in adult literacy classes and graduated from the Bible Institute. Joseph has planted 4 churches and continues to make disciples of Jesus. If you would like to support the Bible Training Institute, please click the button below.
