Scouting Out a New Globalscope Campus Ministry
A group of eight Globalscope staff and students from our El Pozo campus ministry in Puebla, Mexico returned on Friday from a five-day scouting trip to Guanajuato, a city in the middle of Mexico that is home to Universidad de Guanajuato and its 50,000 students. This was the second trip there to see if it's the right place to plant a new Globalscope campus ministry.
Gigi was a part of the group and shared her thoughts about the trip:
Last week was more than simply traveling to another city, it was about getting to know a place and its people; it was about seeing the first step toward a dream that we want to become a reality. We drove six hours away from the original El Pozo that was planted 20 years ago.
Guanajuato, a city in the center of Mexico, is home to thousands of students who attend UG (University of Guanajuato) who seek to be part of something bigger. Our prayer was to be able to identify if this was where God wanted to expand his work outside of Puebla. We prayed every morning and evening together asking for it to be evident.
We met lots of students while exploring the campus and we decided to host a game night in our Airbnb. We invited around 20 students, ordered pizzas, and waited patiently for friends to arrive. Not only did we meet lots of students, but we got phone numbers! More than ten students showed up and we hung out until 2:00 in the morning. We could so obviously see God working in the living room of our Airbnb.
After that night, for us, it was undeniable that God had answered with a capital YES to our prayers. We feel confident that Guanajuato is the place for El Pozo 2.0.
The group said that meeting and spending time with students was, without a doubt, the most enriching experience of the trip. The warmth and hospitality of the university community in Guanajuato made them feel welcomed from the first moment; it only takes one conversation to notice how cheerful and welcoming they are.
Whether it was walking through the colorful streets of Guanajuato in front of the university, enjoying a game night while sharing pizza at the Airbnb, or contemplating the impressive views from the top of the Bufa Hill, each moment reminded them of why they love what they do.
It was an opportunity to reaffirm their mission at El Pozo and give a new meaning to their purpose: loving students, knowing Jesus, and changing the world.
Maybe God is calling you to serve with the new team in Guanajuato, Mexico or one of our other Globalscope campus ministries! Contact us at mobilization@cmfi.org and let's talk about it.
