Tamar’s Project reaches out to at-risk young women in Brazil

When Miriã Curinga and some of her friends noticed that many of the young women they knew were not getting any biblical guidance on their life issues, they knew they had to act.

“We saw that these girls need a biblical perspective about so many of the problems that they are dealing with these days,” said Miriã, who is the daughter of Pastor Tarcisio Curinga, a CMF partner in a remote and under-resourced small city in Brazil. “We saw an urgent need to provide this perspective because no one at the church was talking about these things with them.”

The young women launched an educational support group called “Tamar’s Project,” and hold two Saturday meetings each month at the Agape Mission building in Piancó, Brazil.

“Tamar’s Project is designed for girls 9-18 years of age,” said Miriã. “The goal is to show them what Jesus has said about these situations and explain that the solution for their problems is in Jesus Christ.”

Miriã and her co-leaders choose topics that the young women will relate to and then provide biblical guidance in a relevant way.

“So far, we’ve talked about women’s health issues, abuse and trauma, family, identity, principles and true communion,” said Miriã. “We mix the lessons up with games, music and group interactions so we can get to know the girls better.

“Our focus in the meetings is to search for opportunities to pray for them and share the Bible,” she added. “Some of the women from the church are praying for us, too.”

Miriã and her friends are pleased with the interest the group has shown for the meetings.

“We see God working in the girls’ hearts, and in ours, too,” said Miriã. “It’s so beautiful to see what we can do just by explaining simple things that Jesus told us in the Bible. We are so thankful for this opportunity to help.”
