Telling a Story of Hope

Recently the village of Nakalorlor in northwestern Kenya hosted a three-day discipleship training. This community has had a church for a little over a year now, and our Kenya Church Catalyst team decided it was time to have a level two DMM (Disciple Making Movements) training there.

While planning the training with our Kenyan partners, CMF missionary Eric Pitts asked if they would like him to attend, and they gave him a polite no. “We are happy that you want to be involved, but we fear that it will be your training if you are at the training. We want the community to see this as their own thing.” He happily agreed with their assessment and planned to go for one session, just to observe the teaching and give pointers where necessary. However, when the day came Eric was not feeling well enough to travel to the village and had to stay behind.

One of the sessions of the training focused on telling your story. A man stepped forward and shared about his struggles with alcohol. Not only was his health suffering, but his relationships were also troubled, his neighbors were often arguing with him. Recently, after hearing about Jesus, he decided that he wanted to change his life and follow him. He was baptized that day.

When he returned the next day, seven more people decided to follow him in his decision, saying, “If God can change this man’s life, I know he can change mine!”
