Turkana irrigated farms will help 100 families in 2020

The Turkana, Kenya, farming team is on track to help 100 families with access to solar irrigation in 2020, reports team leader Eric Lorupoe.

“From the beginning of the year to this month, we have established farms for 80 families,” said Eric. “The farmers from the first ones we established at the beginning of the year are now enjoying an abundance of food after the last wave of locust invasions. The farms are now green, and the farmers remain encouraged to keep working to provide for their families.”

Gene Morden, a CMF team member who started the solar irrigation and farm projects shortly arriving in Turkana in 1995, points out that “there has not been any relief food distributed in Turkana this year, so the value and importance of the farms for the sustenance of families has increased.”

“We are asking for support for about eight farms, at a cost of about $160,000, for 2021,” he added.

“More than 50 families are currently still working on clearing their land for the establishment of farms,” added Eric. “These areas include Kalomede, Nasinyuk, Abukut, Kure and Lobuin.”

“A lot of work has been going on to establish the farms and it has taken great effort from the beneficiaries and the farm team to ensure success,” said Eric. “We thank God for all of you who support the project and helped restore hope to the farmers this year. You have made it possible for us to help the vulnerable in Turkana!”
